Manual therapy or manipulative therapy (MT) refers to hands on treatment including myofascial release, joint mobilisation and manipulation, and mobilisation of near all tissue. MT could be applied to joints, muscles or nerves to reduce pain, increase range and quality of motion, improve nerve mobility, increasing muscle length and restoring normal function of targeted tissue. MT is very effective for managing musculoskeletal pain by reducing concentration of inflammatory mediators and increasing pain relief substances. MT appears to inhibit spinal excitability and pain sensitivity in the central nervous system.
MT is cost effective intervention and is rarely associated with serious complications. Also innumerable patient stories support the effectiveness of MT in treating a great variety of musculoskeletal conditions.
MT is commonly used in acute and chronic back pain, cervicogenic headaches, neuropathies (sciatica, brachialgia), joint and muscle dysfunctions (frozen shoulder, tennis/golfer elbow), and post surgical recovery.
Remedial massage is the systematic assessment and treatment of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body to assist in rehabilitation, pain and injury management.
Remedial massage aims to reduce or eliminate pain, and restore normal function of muscles and joints. It can help increase joint mobility and flexibility, stimulate the lymphatic system and promote blood flow, particularly to injured areas. Remedial massage is focussed on treating a particular injury or condition through massage and stretching.
Based on treatment plan and patient's needs, our therapist applies appropriate techniques to treat affected area.
Remedial massage has used to reduced neck and back pain; cervicogenic headaches; muscle spasms and stiffness; fibromyalgia symptoms and anxiety level in cancer patients. The risk of harmful effects from massage therapy appears to be low.
Ultrasound (US) has been used in the clinical practice since 1950’s and remains a popular and evidenced intervention for a range of clinical problems. The frequencies used in therapy are usually between 1.0 and 3.0 MHz.
The absorption of US energy (sound waves) is greater in superficial tissues than in deeper tissues. Also the penetration of US is not the same in each tissue type. Then best absorbing structures are those with high collagen content such as ligaments, tendons, fascia, joint capsules and scar tissues.
The process of tissue repair is a complex series of cascaded, chemically regulated events that lead to production of scar tissue. Application of US to injured tissues speeds up the rate of healing and enhances the quality of the repair. Therefore the US therapy is used to treat adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), joints pain and stiffness caused by inflammation (acute and chronic), skeletal muscle and tendon injuries.
Dry needling (also called Western medical acupuncture) could be defined as therapeutic modality involving insertion of the fine needles. The modality has evolved from Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence-based medicine. In dry needling, practitioners no longer adhere to concepts such as yin/yang and circulation of qi, and using acupuncture as a part of conventional medicine rather than alternative medicine system.
IASTM is a skilled myofascial intervention used to provide soft-tissue massage or mobilization. This method allows therapist to provide deeper tissue penetration and increased vibration feedback required in treatment of various soft tissue disorders.
IASTM has evolved from Gua Sha which is popular easter medicine treatment.
The instruments effectively release and break down scar tissue, adhesions and fascial restrictions. The pathologies of the soft tissue may have developed after surgery, immobilisation and repeated strain. The controlled microtrauma stimulates resorption of excessive fibrosis, along with inducing repair and regeneration of collagen fibres. Therefore IASTM have therapeutic effects in treatment of shoulder impingement, plantar fascitis, neck and back pain, calf and heel pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, post-surgical scars, muscle strains and myofascial trigger points. IASTM have showed to improve range of motion, strength and pain perception.
Kinesio Taping method was developed by Dr Kenzo Kase in 1970s. This method is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscle and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. By targeting different receptors in somatosensory system kinesio tape alleviates pain and facilitating lymphatic drainage by lifting skin. The skin lifting increases interstitial space and allows the inflammation of targeted area to decrease. Kinesio taping has been proven to have positive physiological effect on the skin, lymphatic and circulatory systems, fascia, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints. This method can be used in conjunction with other clinical treatments and modalities.
Kinesio taping is a drug free modality and can be used to treat patients with: joint, muscle and ligaments injury, acute and chronic neck and back pain, sciatica, whiplash and headache and post-surgical recovery. The taping also supports athletes with pre-existing injuries during physical activity such as muscle strain, joint injuries and acute and chronic overuse syndromes.
